C.elegans Jade Demonstration

What this Is

This is a demonstration of the Jade library, a Java-based interface between the object-oriented ACEDB database and the Java programming language.

This demo requires Internet Explorer 4.0 (or higher), Netscape Navigator 4.0 (or higher), or HotJava. If you are using an earlier browser, the panel below will stay orange and nothing will ever happen. Sorry, but this is because the Java class libraries are evolving.

This demo has user interface problems! Because it was put together using an early version of JDK 1.0, there are various coordinate system inconsistencies, causing parts of the displays to be cut off on some platforms. Scrollbars are missing. Buttons and fonts are ugly. These problems will be fixed.

To use this demo, press the "Run" button. You will be presented with a series of object classes in the ACEDB databases, such as Allele, Author, and Map. Double-click on any class to see the list of objects contained within it. Double-click on an object to see its contents. Repeat as needed. Notice that you can double-click on several objects over a brief period of time and they will all open up asynchronously. While one database query is being processed, the system is able to issue others in a multithreaded fashion.

The default display is a text tree. If a node contains more than a few branches, it will be replaced by a number indicating how many branches are available. Click on the node to expand and contract its branches.

A few displays are special. To see one such display, choose the class named Genetic Map, then double-click on one of the roman numerals (these are C. elegans chromosome names). You will see a graphical display of the selected genetic map.

The ugly green bar across each window is the Close button. Click on this to get rid of a window. If you get really desperate, find this window and click Clean Up to get rid of all windows.

To use the help system, select "Help" from the menu on the far right of the window. You can then click on an element in any of the windows to get some explanatory text. Click on the panel labeled "Exit Help" at the top of the window to close the help dialog.

Complete download and installation instructions can be found in the Jade distribution pages.
