Advantages: Easiest to set up, pretty reliable

Disadvantages: Authorizes the computer, not the user

Host-based access control

Allow access to selected hosts or subnets.

• Restriction by DNS name
• Restriction by IP address/subnet

User authentication

Allow access based on user's credentials

• Basic authentication (passwords)
• Digest authentication (a better password system)
• Certificate-based authentication (cryptographic signatures)
